Chandratal Lake

Chandratal Lake

Chandratal Lake, located at a height of roughly 4300 metres in the mighty Himalayas, is widely referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes. The magnificent lake, which is the source of the Chandra River, is located on the Samudra Tapu plateau in the Lahaul region of the Lahaul and Spiti district. The crescent form of the lake gives it the name “Chandra Taal” (Moon Lake). This lake is also one of two Ramsar sites in India, both of which are high-altitude wetlands. It used to be a stopover for Tibetan traders on their way to Spiti and the Kullu valley, but now it attracts tens of thousands of adventure seekers.

Key Monastery

Dromton, a pupil of the famed teacher Atisha in the 11th century, is thought to have created Kye Monastery and Ki Monastery. It has a collection of antique texts and murals, as well as Buddha idols in the Dhyana pose. The majestic monastery also serves as a religious training centre for the Lamas, with over 300 lamas receiving their education here.

Kunzum Pass

Kunzum Pass

Kunzum Pass, or Kunzum La as it is known among locals, is one of India’s highest motorable mountain crossings, rising to 4,551 metres above mean sea level. Kunzum La offers a remarkable 360-degree view of the Bara- Shigri Glacier (the world’s second longest glacier), a jaw-dropping perspective of the Chandrabhaga Range, and a breathtaking glimpse of the Spiti Valley. This is also the start of a 9-kilometer walk to Chandratal.

Dhankar Monastery

This Monastery is located between Kaza and Tabo atop a rock. From here, you may get a fantastic view of the Spiti River. This monastery has a ‘Vairocharan’ statue with four Buddha statues seated in the four directions, as well as old paintings, murals, and scriptures.
